Shanghai history museum, founded in 1983 was formally opened to the public on May 27, 1984 with the name, ‘Exhibition Center of Shanghai Historical Relics’. It is a museum which reflects comprehensive and detailed aspects of development of Shanghai and its surroundings.

It is also sometimes called as Shanghai Municipal History Museum, which was re-opened to the public, in May, 2001, under the Oriental Pearl Radio & TV Tower, after shifting it from Hongqiao Road.

More than 1,300 cultural relics, literature, and pictures are presented to elaborate the vibrant history of this city. Much of the collection is displayed in the form of waxworks, which enhances the aesthetics of the museum. The museum represents a complete picture of the long history of Shanghai from remote ancient times to the liberation of the city in 1949. Its five sections give a clear picture of how Shanghai developed from a small fishing village to the biggest city in China.
